About Social Optimus

Dana Willmer, PhD Founder Social Optimus LLC
Workplace social skills, taught as clear, learnable behavior

Most people were never taught workplace social skills in a way they could actually use.

They were told to communicate better. Be more proactive. Show more confidence. Speak up more.

That advice sounds useful until real work gets messy.

Social Optimus exists to make workplace social skills practical. Not vague. Not personality-based. Not full of jargon.

I create self-guided digital products that teach workplace social skills through clear, observable behavior. These tools are designed to help people learn, practice, and apply stronger responses in real work situations on their own.

My point of view

A lot has been written about emotional intelligence.

That matters. People need awareness. They need to notice tone, pressure, tension, and other people’s reactions.

But awareness alone is not enough at work.

Social intelligence at work has to explain action.

It has to answer questions like:

What is this situation actually asking of me?
What behavior fits this moment?
How do I respond clearly without creating more confusion?
How do I handle pressure, feedback, tradeoffs, or unclear requests better?

That action shows up as behavior.

And because behavior is observable, it can be learned, practiced, and improved.

That is the foundation of Social Optimus.

What makes this approach different

Most workplace advice names the trait, but not the behavior.

It tells people to be more strategic, more confident, or more collaborative without showing what those things look like in real moments at work.

I take a different approach.

I break workplace social skills into clear parts people can actually use:

Why it matters
What the interaction is really about and what risk people often miss.

What the behavior is
What stronger performance looks like in a real work moment.

How to do it
Practical tools, examples, and repeatable ways to respond more clearly.

This is not about becoming a different person.

It is about building better social patterns at work.

What these products help people do

My products are built for the moments that shape trust, clarity, and reputation at work.

That includes situations like:

  • handling vague or last-minute requests

  • responding clearly under pressure

  • asking better questions

  • communicating tradeoffs

  • using feedback better

  • navigating tense or awkward interactions

  • building judgment they can apply on their own

The goal is not perfect wording.

The goal is better judgment expressed through better behavior.

I’m Dana R. Willmer, PhD, founder of Social Optimus.

I hold a PhD in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh and have 15 years of director and senior vice president leadership experience across engineering, science, and software development environments. Across those roles, I saw the same pattern again and again:

Capable people were often given vague feedback about soft skills, but almost no one translated that feedback into clear behavior they could actually practice

That gap is what Social Optimus is built to fix.

My work combines behavior science, real workplace leadership, and practical judgment to turn unclear expectations into self-guided learning tools people can use in real work moments.

No jargon. No guessing. Just clearer skills for workplace interactions.
